About the Co-Op program with Drexel University

On February 2012 by initiative of Irma H Russo, MD we established an agreement with Drexel University to have, through their Co-Op program, interns that rotate for six months Ad Honorem working 20 hours a week for their training in breast cancer research. Their unique background n engineering and biology provide a significant intellectual force that has been easily integrated in our research endeavor thanks to Dr Julia Santucci- Pereira that has been coordinating the activities of the interns.

Up to now we have trained the following interns listed from Drexel University in its Co-Op program and the BCRL will continue offering several positions each semester in Cell and Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics.

In the Cell and Molecular Biology position, the interns work with our breast cancer research team of investigators developing a research project. The steps of the project involve:

Experience in major breast cancer research topics is acquired and the students are exposed to state-of-the-art technologies in the biomedical field. The students report to a senior research investigator who has the responsibility of mentoring and supervision. The duties and responsibilities may include:

The qualifications and requirements are:

In the bioinformatics the interns work with our breast cancer research team of investigators to perform bioinformatics analysis of gene expression and gene regulation data from samples exposed to different carcinogen and/or therapeutic regimens. Experience in state-of-the-art technologies of the biomedical research enterprise is acquired. The steps of the project involve:

The intern reports to a senior research investigator who has the responsibility of mentoring and supervision. The duties and responsibilities may include: 1- data entry and statistical analysis; 2- use of bioinformatics engines and programs; 3- analysis of data and interpretation; 4- scientific literature searches; 5- present results at lab meetings and assist in writing research articles; and 6- perform other duties related to general lab operation to be shared with team members. The qualifications and requirements are: 1- Major in life sciences or in another scientific area with desire to learn and practice bioinformatics; 2- Data entry and analysis skills; 3- Good communication and writing skills.
